PROVO, Utah – The Weber State men's tennis team started the 2016 season at Brigham Young University. The Cougars defeated the Wildcats 7-0.
"We had a good match," Director of Tennis, Brad Ferriera said. "I would be surprised if BYU is not ranked in the top 50 by the middle of the year. They are very good and everyone played them tough. We started off very close in the doubles but a nervous start put us behind. Everyone is playing better than last year already."
The Cougars started off sweeping two of the three doubles matches. The third doubles match did not record a score.
In singles play Landon Barlow took his match into three sets but BYU's J.D. Malan ended up with the victory with 4-6, 6-2 and 6-4 scores in the No. 4 spot.
In the No. 1 spot Jakub Gewert put up a well fought match but fell 6-4, 6-3 to Keaton Cullimore.
The rest of the Wildcats also put up a strong fight but ultimately fell and gave BYU the 7-0 victory.
The Wildcats are 0-1 overall on the season and will next take on the University of Utah Jan. 30 in Salt Lake City. Weber State will start Big Sky Conference play Feb. 12 against Montana State.
