OGDEN - Weber State's playoff hopes are still alive. The Wildcats knocked off No. 16 Cal Poly 22-15 Saturday afternoon at Stewart Stadium. The win moves the 'Cats to 6-4 on the season and 5-2 in Big Sky play with one game remaining in the regular season.
Weber State honored 17 seniors prior to Saturday's game and the 'Cats sent them out on a high note. Cal Poly came into the game ranked second in the nation in rushing offense at 370 yards per game and the Wildcat defense held the Mustangs to a season-low 190 yards rushing. Weber State totaled 300 yards of offense, compared to 291 yards by Cal Poly and forced two Mustang turnovers.
"Our defense did a great job of slowing down Cal Poly and got us out of some drives," said WSU head coach Jay Hill. "I was really proud of how we kept playing and fighting. I couldn't be more proud of our seniors for how they played. We have a big game next week and still have things we can improve on."
The Wildcats got off to a great start, jumping out to a 15-0 lead. Jadrian Clark found Andrew Vollert for an 18-yard TD less than four minutes into the game. Later in the first quarter, Clark found Drew Batchelor for a 16-yard TD and the 'Cats led 12-0 after the first quarter. WSU added a 33-yard field goal by Taylor Hintze with 5:44 left in the second quarter to make it 15-0.
The Mustangs scored in the final minute of the half to make it 15-7 at halftime, then scored on their first possession of the second half to tie the game at 15-15. On his first career carry, sophomore Brady May scored from two-yards out with 9:09 to play to give the Wildcats the go-ahead touchdown. Weber State's defense had an interception and a stop on Cal Poly's next possessions to seal the win.

Several players made key plays on defense for the Wildcats. Cory Thomson, who was moved to defense for this game earlier in the week, had 14 tackles to lead the Wildcats. Tre'von Johnson had 12 tackles and a sack. Josh Burton had 10 tackles, a fumble recovery, an interception and a pass breakup. LeGrand Toia also added 10 tackles. WSU had five tackles for loss and six pass breakups.
Weber State closes the regular season next Saturday at Idaho State. The 'Cats need a win to be in consideration for the FCS Playoffs. WSU is currently alone in third place in the conference standings.
The Wildcats are guaranteed a winning season for the second-straight season.
