HENDERSON, Nev. – The Wildcats split their first day in the desert.
Led by a pair of home runs, the Weber State University softball team dropped Cal State Northridge 9-8, before falling 2-1 to in-state rival Utah State in the day's second game during the DeMarini Desert Classic, hosted by UNLV at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park.
Junior KyRae Kogianes hit a solo home run – her third long ball in seven games – to kick things off against the Matadors, with sophomore second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff hitting a triple, followed by an RBI double from senior third baseman Alyson Kulp that made it 2-0. After freshman outfielder JaeCie Wilson walked, senior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer hit a three-run shot to center field to make it 5-0.
Wilson had an RBI single in the fourth to make it 6-1, Hingsberger had an RBI double in the fifth to make it 7-3.
The Wildcats went up 8-5 on Whitmer's RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth, and scored a ninth run on a Matador error.
CSUN (3-3) answer back with three in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-8, but the sophomore right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling earned her third won of the season as the Matadors hit back-to-back infield pop-ups.
In the second game, Weber State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after sophomore Molly Horne's RBI double, but the Aggies rallied to tie in the second and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth for the 2-1 win.
