AUSTIN, Texas – The Wildcats turned in a pair of strong efforts, but came up just short twice on Friday.
The Weber State University softball team fell 5-3 in eight innings to Tulsa and 3-0 to Illinois during the first day of the Texas Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas at McCombs Field.
Against the Golden Hurricanes, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead the first inning on a two-out RBI single by junior outfielder Sara Hingsberger, and held the lead until Tulsa tied things up on a double.
Weber State got its leadoff batter on base in the seventh, but back-to-back batter's interference calls thwarted the Wildcats brief momentum.
In the tiebreaker, the Golden Hurricanes plated four runs to take a 5-1 lead. In the Wildcats' half of the inning, WSU cut it to 5-3 on a fielder's choice RBI by sophomore catcher Molly Horne and a throwing error by Tulsa's second baseman. Weber State's Krystin Kubo singled after a 10-pitch at-bat to get put the tying run on base, but a ground out to third ended the game.
In the second game of the day, the Wildcats fell behind Illinois 2-0 in the third inning. WSU had a solid chance to score in the fifth when it loaded the bases up, but was just one play short as a flyout to center field ended the inning.
Weber State will be back in action twice on Saturday, taking on Abilene Christian at 4:30 p.m. MT, followed by a rematch with the Fighting Illini at 6:30 p.m. MT. The Wildcats will wrap up the tournament on Sunday morning against No. 24 Texas at 9 a.m. The game against the Longhorns will be televised live on The Longhorn Network (Dish Network 407/DirecTV 677/WatchESPN).
