SANTEE, Calif. – The Wildcats just keep rolling.
Sophomore right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling threw a three-hit shutout for her 10th win of the season and the Weber State University softball team split two games during the second day of action at the San Diego Classic II.
Bohling improved to 10-2 in the circle as the Wildcats dispatched San Jose State 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Santee Sportsplex, bouncing back from a disappointing 8-4 loss to Long Beach State earlier in the day.
Weber State improved to 15-11 overall and will wrap up the tournament at 12:30 p.m. MT (11:30 a.m. Pacific) against St. Mary's. The game against the Gaels will be the final pre-Big Sky Conference game for the Wildcats, who will up their 21-game league slate next weekend against Portland State in Hillsboro, Ore.
While Bohling iced the Spartans from the circle, senior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer burned them at the plate. Whitmer, who leads the Wildcats with a .402 batting average and 33 hits, was 2-for-3 with a two RBI double in the first inning and two-run home run in the sixth as she batted in all four runs.
Senior third baseman Alyson Kulp was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while freshman center fielder JaeCie Wilson was 2-for-4.
During the day's opening game, the Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning after junior KyRae Kogianes hit a ground-rule double down the left line to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI double from junior outfielder Carley White. Wilson singled to put runners in the corner, and the Wildcats brought two more across the plate on junior designated player Mackenzie Corta's RBI single to center field and a fielding error by the 49ers center fielder to make it 3-0.
Long Beach State's bates heated up in the top of the fourth as the scored six runs on five hits to take a 6-3 lead. The 49ers made it 8-3 in the sixth, and Kulp scored on a fielding error by Long Beach's left fielder in the bottom of the seventh for the final score.
