HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Wildcats were quick to put a disappointing start behind them.
After dropping their Big Sky Conference opener earlier in the day, the Weber State University softball team rallied to earn a split on the opening day league action against Portland State.
Senior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer's three RBIs proved to be the difference in game two as the Wildcats rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to claim a 5-3 victory over the Vikings at the Gordon Faber Complex.
Weber State (1-1 Big Sky, 17-12 overall) fell 4-0 in the day's opening game, despite holding Portland State (1-1, 7-16) to just four hits in the contest.
In the game two victory, Whitmer was 2-for-3 with RBI singles in the third and fifth innings, along with a sacrifice fly RBI in the seventh.
Junior catcher KyRae Kogianes was 1-for-1, walking twice as a leadoff batter, with an RBI single in the fifth, while senior third baseman Alyson Kulp scored on a wild pitch during the Wildcats' three-run fifth inning rally.
The Vikings loaded the bases in the seventh, but sophomore right-hander Bailey Seek ended it with a strikeout.
In the opening game, the Wildcats had six hits and eight base-runners, but were unable to get the breakthrough play they needed to push runs across the plate. All four of the Vikings runs came via a pair of home runs, a solo shot in the second and a three-run home run in the fifth.
The series' finale is set for 1 p.m. Mountain on Saturday.
