WSU clinches Big Sky Tournament spot; defeats ISU

OGDEN - Weber State men's tennis have clinched a spot in the Big Sky Tournament with its 4-3 win over Idaho State Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats are undefeated in Big Sky play with an 8-0 record and sit atop the conference standings.
"That match was a little too close for comfort," Director of Tennis Brad Ferreira said. "Idaho State is probably one of the toughest teams to play in the conference. They always play very tough. We will take the win and move on and prepare for the next one."
Weber State started Sunday's match by claiming the doubles point. Sanjay Goswami and Stefan Cooper came from behind and defeated Sebastian Edin and Bjorn Scheepbouwer 6-4 in the No. 1 spot. In the No. 2 doubles spot, the Wildcat pair of Todd Fought and Jakub Gewert defeated ISU's William Edin and Josh Goodwin 6-1.
Weber State's two doubles victories gave the Wildcats the one point advantage which was crucial going into singles play and in the overall team victory.
Singles play started off with a WSU victory in the No. 6 spot as Goswami defeated Haseeb Khan 6-0, 6-3.
Cooper kept the wins rolling for the Wildcats as he defeated Francis Filipovich 7-6, 6-0 in the No. 3 spot. Cooper now has a six match winning streak and is undefeated in Big Sky play.
Fought also remained undefeated in Big Sky play by defeating William Edin 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot.
With the victories from Fought, Cooper and Goswami and the doubles point the Wildcats claimed the 4-3 victory over the Bengals.
Weber State is now 10-6 overall on the season. The Wildcats will head on the last road trip of the season to take on Idaho and Eastern Washington before hosting the final match of the season against Montana.
