OGDEN – The Bengals came out swinging, and the Wildcats' comeback attempt fell just short.
The Weber State University softball team had its seven-game Big Sky Conference win streak snapped as the Wildcats fell 4-2 to rival Idaho State on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Complex.
The Bengals recorded hits in their first three at-bats, staking out an early lead that they would never relinquish, as they improved to 6-2 in Big Sky Conference, 19-17 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 7-2 and 25-14.
Six different Wildcats recorded hits, with four of those coming in the last two innings as WSU valiantly tried to rally.
Junior designated player KyRae Kogianes singled, and then scored on an RBI triple by junior outfielder Sara Hingsberger to cut the lead to 3-1. Senior first baseman Krystin Kubo followed that up with a single up the middle to make it 3-2.
Idaho State tacked one back on its side of the ledger on the final play of its half of the seventh, giving Weber State one last chance, but the Wildcats came up just short despite getting a single to center field by freshman pinch hitter Sadie Blacker.
Weber State and Idaho State will finished up the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at Noon.
