LOGAN, Utah – The Wildcats keep finding ways to come through in the clutch.
Senior third baseman Alyson Kulp smashed a two-run triple with one out in the seventh inning and the Weber State University softball team edged out in-state rival Utah State 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Johnson Field.
The win is the Wildcats 12th in their last 14 games as the team moved to 28-14 overall with its third straight win. Weber State also improved to 5-2 in games against in-state competition this year, and has now won four of its last five meetings with the Aggies.
Utah State took a 1-0 lead in the second after stinging together back-to-back doubles, and the Aggies nearly snagged a 2-0 advantage in the third but junior left fielder Carley White made a stunning over-the-fence catch at left center to prevent a home run by Utah State pitcher Noelle Johnson.
Junior designated player Mackenzi Corta hit a two-out RBI single that scored junior Katelyn Robinson from second base and pulled Weber State level at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.
With the score tied at 1-1, sophomore second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff hit a one-out bunt single and White followed that up with a shallow outfield single, with both players advancing an additional base on an error at third base.
With two in scoring position, Kulp hit a line drive triple to right center that scored Brinkerhoff and White, giving the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.
Weber State quickly got the first two outs of the seventh, but consecutive hits and a walk brought one Utah State run across the plate and put a potential walk-off run on base, but the Wildcats ended up the game with a catch on a pop-up foul ball to Whitmer.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Friday and Saturday in Grand Forks, North Dakota, when they travel to face the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. MT on Friday, with a second game to immediately follow, with the series set to wrap up on Saturday at 10 a.m. MT.
