Wildcats drop season opener 45-6 to Utah State

9/2/2016 3:50:00 AM | Football

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State rushed for 428 yards and knocked off Weber State 45-6 in the 2016 season opener Thursday night at the newly-renovated Maverik Stadium.

Utah State totaled 528 yards of total offense with six rushing touchdowns. Weber State compiled 245 yards of total offense.

"You have to give Utah State credit," said WSU head coach Jay Hill. "You can't allow a team to rush for that many yards and expect to win. Utah State did a great job and we were worn down at the end. We have a lot of self-reflection to do and have to move on and prepare for the next one."

The Aggies jumped out to a 21-0 lead all on touchdown runs by Devante Mays. He had an 18-yard touchdown run less than three minutes into the game for the first score, then had another 18-yard TD run with 2:10 left in the first quarter. Mays opened the second quarter with a 66-yard touchdown run.

The Wildcats got on the board with a one-yard touchdown run by Treshawn Garrett in the final minute of the first half to make it 21-6 at halftime.

It was all Utah State in the second half as the Aggies scored 17 unanswered points, including three more rushing touchdowns.

Garrett finished the day with 96 rushing yards for the Wildcats, as the 'Cats totaled 108 yards on the ground. Senior Jadrian Clark was 15-of-27 passing for 137 yards with one interception. Junior transfer Andrew Vollert was the top receiver, grabbing five catches for 70 yards. Cameron Livingston had four catches for 18 yards.

The Wildcats are back on the road next week when they play at South Dakota on Saturday, Sept. 10. The home opener will be Sept. 17 against Sacramento State.
