Wildcats drop home game 32-16 to Southern Utah

OGDEN - For the sixth time in the last seven years, the road team has won between Weber State and Southern Utah. This time is was the Thunderbirds who pulled out a 32-16 win over the Wildcats Saturday night at Stewart Stadium.
The loss drops the Wildcats, who were ranked 16th in the nation coming into the game, to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky play. Southern Utah improves to the same 4-2 and 2-1 record.
Southern Utah won for the fourth-straight game in Ogden. The road team has now won six of the last seven games in the series, dating back to 2011.
Weber State senior quarterback Stefan Cantwell left the game early in the second quarter per concussion protocol and did not return. The Wildcats were unable to match the Thunderbirds, snapping WSU's three-game winning streak.

SUU scored a touchdown on its second play from scrimmage, a 78-yard pass from Patrick Tyler to Logan Parker. The Wildcats then had back-to-back field goals by Trey Tuttle to cut the lead to 7-6 early in the second quarter, when Cantwell left the game.
The Thunderbirds added a 19-yard pass to make it 13-6 with 9:20 left in the second quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Weber State freshman Rashid Shaheed returned the kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 13-13. Shaheed's touchdown is the eighth 100 yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Weber State history.
SUU's Chance Bearnson picked off a Wildcat pass and returned it 13-yards for a touchdown to make it 20-13 at halftime. The Thunderbirds added a field goal and another touchdown to stretch the lead to 29-13 and never looked back.
Southern Utah had 487 yards of total offense, compared to a season-low 250 yards for the Wildcats. SUU also had 19 first downs and had two interceptions. Weber State also had a season-low 84 yards rushing and threw for 166 yards.
Individually, Cantwell was 7-of-13 passing for 113 yards before leaving the game. Justin Shaw and Braden Miles split time at quarterback behind Cantwell.
Shaheed had three catches for 52 yards and senior tight end Andrew Vollert had three catches for 37 yards. Treshawn Garrett had six carries for 28 yards rushing.
LeGrand Toia had eight tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss to lead the defense. Landon Stice also had eight tackles and one forced fumble. The Wildcats had eight tackles for loss.
Trey Tuttle was a perfect 3-of-3 on field goals, connecting on field goals of 37, 39 and 21 yards.
The Wildcats are back on the road at Cal Poly Saturday at 7 p.m. Mountain time. The next home game will be Oct. 28 against Montana.
