FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Against the odds, the Wildcats battled through.
Junior forward Morgan Quarnberg scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, and fourth in the past five games, in the 82nd minute, lifting the Weber State University to a dramatic come-from-behind win over Northern Arizona on Friday night at Lumberjack Stadium.
Quarnberg's goal, her second match-winner in the Wildcats' last four contests, was her team-best fifth of the season, and fourth of conference action.
Weber State improved to 2-3-1 in Big Sky play (3-10-1 overall), and is now 2-1-1 in its last four matches.
The Wildcats, who had their flight from Salt Lake City to Phoenix cancelled on Thursday resulting in a scrambled travel schedule, fell behind 1-0 in the 23rd minute after the Lumerjacks' Mei-Te Coco scored after a short pass in the box.
It only took six minutes to level things back up again though.
Freshman midfielder Grace Youngberg pounced on a failed clearance by NAU and crushed a screaming right-to-left rocket from 20 yards out that brought the scoreline back to even in the 29th minute. It was Youngberg's first career goal and point.
Weber State and Northern Arizona traded chances for the rest of the first half any into the second, but it would be the Wildcats who broke through late.
Freshman defender Cambrie Lake sent a beautiful ball in out of the wing in the 82nd minute, perfectly floating it over the Northern Arizona defense to Quarnberg, who deftly settled it before punching it into the goal from eight yards out to give Weber State the 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats, who are 7-1-3 all-time against the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff, locked down defensively over the waning minutes to successfully preserve their first road win of the year.
Weber State will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts Sacramento State at 12:30 p.m. at Wildcat Soccer Field. The Hornets are coming off a 6-3 win over Idaho State at home on Friday, a match that saw them blow open a 1-1 match with three goals in 90 seconds of the second half. The match kicks off a three-match homestand for the Wildcats, who have just four regular season matches remaining.
