LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Wildcats opened the second week of competition with a pair of setbacks.

The Weber State University softball team fell 7-1 to Boise State in the opening game of the DeMarini Desert Classic on Friday morning at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park in Henderson, Nev., and then suffered a heart-breaking 6-5 loss to UNLV on Friday's second game at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas.

The Wildcats (0-6-1) held a 5-4 with two outs in the seventh against the Rebels, but a 1-1 single put a base runner on and UNLV's next batter hit a two-run homer for the win.

It was a tough break for Weber State, which rallied from a 4-2 deficit on a two-run triple from McKinley Brinkerhoff in the sixth inning, and then took a 5-4 lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Riana Splinter that scored Sara Hingsberger. Hingsberger, who went 3-for-4 against the Rebels, led off the seventh with a double.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead early in the game on back-to-back RBI singles from Hingsberger and Rae Gall.

In the opening game of the day, the Broncos scored five unearned runs in the second inning, and the Wildcats were unable to rally .

Takesha Saltern was 2-for-3 against Boise State, while Courtney Pestka had an RBI single.

Weber State will be back in action for the second day of the tournament on Saturday, taking on Texas State at 1:15 p.m. MT and Utah State at 3:30 p.m. MT. Both games will be at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park in Henderson.
