SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Wildcats split their rain-shortened opening weekend of the Big Sky Conference season.
With its scheduled three-game series shortened to two, the Weber State University softball team nabbed a dramatic 3-2 win in 10 innings in their conference opener, before suffering a 4-0 setback in the second game against Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
The opening win extended the Wildcats' winning streak to a school record 10 games, with junior catcher Molly Horne driving in the winning run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Weber State (1-1 Big Sky, 17-11-1 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single from freshman outfielder Takesha Saltern that plated junior second baseman McKinkley Brinkerhoff.
The Wildcats doubled up the lead in the fourth when junior outfielder Rae Gall's RBI single through the right side scored senior designated player Mackenzi Corta to make it 2-0.
The Hornets (1-1 Big Sky, 11-14-1 overall) pulled even on a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, ultimately sending the game into extra innings.
Weber State led off the 10th with back-to-back singles from Saltern and Hawker, with Corta moving both into scoring position on an sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for Horne to bring home Saltern and give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead.
Sacramento State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, added a third in the second and another in the fifth in earning the win as Weber State stranded eight baserunners.
After 29 straight games away from home, Weber State is now set to make its 2017 home debut on Friday against North Dakota. First pitch between the Wildcats and Fighting Hawks is set for 2 p.m. on Friday, followed immediately by a second game, with the series finale set for Noon on Saturday.Â
