OGDEN – It was thisclose for the Wildcats.

Despite having base runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, the Weber State University softball team suffered a controversial and heart-breaking 2-1 loss in 10 innings to Montana in Friday's winner's bracket finale during the Big Sky Conference Softball Championship at Wildcat Softball Complex.

The result means that if Weber State is to win its third straight Big Sky tournament title, the Wildcats will have to do it the hard way.

Weber State (32-18-1) will face Idaho State (18-26) at 11 a.m., with the winner advancing to face Montana in the Big Sky Championship game. In order to win the title, the Wildcats or Bengals would have to defeat the Grizzlies twice to claim the title.

Montana (34-22) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Wildcats answered in the second when senior third baseman KyRae Kogianes smacked a one-out triple, and then scored when the Grizzlies' second baseman mishandled a hit ball from sophomore second baseman Sadie Blacker that allowed Kogianes to come across the plate.

The final five innings at the plate were a collection of near misses and frustration for the Wildcats, who stranded eight base runners, and committed a pair of costly base-running errors.

The Wildcats, however, will have to quickly put their disappointment behind them, as they face the Bengals to open Saturday's action. Weber State swept the season series with Idaho State, winning 2-1, 7-6, and 9-6 at Miller Ranch Stadium in Pocatello, Idaho.
