Thomas' late goal lifts Wildcats past Bison

OGDEN – The Wildcats finally broke through.

A 82nd minute rainmaker from freshman defender Haley Thomas pulled the plug.

Thomas, a 5-foot-8 native of Kennewick, Wash., launched a shot from 40 yards out that slipped through the grasp of the North Dakota State goalkeeper and into the net, lifting the Weber State University women's soccer team to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Bison on Friday night at Wildcat Soccer Field.

"It was such an amazing feeling to score my first collegiate goal in a game like that," Thomas said. "I couldn't have done it without all the support from my teammates."

Senior goalkeeper Sydnie Brough earned the shutout in goal, her first of the season and sixth of her career overall, while making a pair of saves.

Weber State, which improved to 1-2-0 overall, outshot North Dakota State 10-9, including 5-3 in shots on frame, and held a sizable advantage in possession time through the course of the 90-minute match. The Wildcats have outshot all three opponents so far this season.

"I thought the girls had a number of good spells throughout the game," said Weber State coach Tim Crompton, who earned his 100th career victory against the Bison. "They played well defensively and made key plays when they were needed."

Thomas and sophomore central defender Gabrielle Vivier-Hannay went the distance on the backline for the third straight match as the Wildcats, holding the Bison to just three shots on goal.

The Wildcats won't have long to celebrate, however, as they head to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon on Sunday at 8 p.m. MT. The Lopes are 0-3-0 this season after falling 1-0 to Northern Arizona on Friday night in Flagstaff, Ariz.
