PHOENIX – Everything started right for the Wildcats, and then everything went wrong.
Despite holding an advantage for nearly 75 minutes, the Weber State University women's soccer team dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 decision in overtime as Grand Canyon found an 89th minute equalizer and then scored in the 96th minute to finish the match off.
The Wildcats (1-3-0) took a 12th minute lead on a short-ranged shot from senior midfielder Kelsi Jones, with junior forward Madison Garlock earning the assist on the play after cross the ball to Jones inside the box.
It's the second straight season Jones has scored against the Lopes, and five of her seven career points have come against GCU.
The teams battled fiercely over the next 75 minutes, with plenty of end-to-end action that saw the Wildcats come up just short of doubling their advantage, while sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Pittman made a handful of athletic saves late as the Lopes pressed for the equalizer.
Grand Canyon converted with just 110 seconds remaining when Madison Cox scored a header to even up the scoreline. Cox would also score the eventual match-winner.
Weber State will be back in action at home on Sunday when the Wildcats host No. 7 UCLA at Wildcat Soccer Field. Kickoff against the Bruins is set for 7 p.m.
