Wildcats fall 2-0 to No. 1 UCLA in front of school-record crowd

OGDEN – The Wildcats' defense held its own against the nation's top-ranked team.
The Weber State University women's soccer team shut out No. 1 UCLA for the opening half and trailed by just one goal until the final seconds of a 2-0 loss to the Bruins in front of a school-record 1,682 fans on Sunday night at Wildcat Soccer Field.
UCLA improved to 6-0-0 this season, while Weber State fell to 1-4-0.
Weber State's defense led by freshman central defender Haley Thomas, sophomore central defender Gabrielle Vivier-Hannay, and junior outsider defender Olivia Glassford, who each went the 90-minute distance, held UCLA's offense to just three shots on goal.
Freshman midfielder Sadie Newsom and sophomore midfielder Megan Price also each played all 90 minutes for the Wildcats.
UCLA broke through the stalemate in the 49th minute when Gabrielle Matulich's crossing shot through traffic from 20 yards out found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
It appeared the one-goal lead would stand as the final result, but the Bruins' Julia Hernandez scored with 10 seconds remaining during a scramble in front of the goal for the two-goal lead.
Weber State will be back in action on Friday in Denton, Texas, where they will take on the University of North Texas at 6 p.m. MT
