LOGAN – The Weber State University men's and women's cross country teams picked up their first taste of outside competition on Saturday morning at the Sagebrush Invitational, hosted by Utah State.

The Wildcats finished second overall to the host Aggies, with Paige Dilmore leading the way on the 5K course at 18 minutes, 50 seconds. Candace Sharp, Michayla Miller, Summer Harper, and Isabella Williams finished consecutively behind Dilmore as the team crossed the finish line in a pack.

"The women ran very controlled today," Weber State women's coach Paul Pilkington said. "They did exactly what I asked them to. They will be ready when it's time to race hard."

On the men's side, Jordan Cross and Dallin Leatham finished third and fourth overall on the 7K course as the Wildcat men finished second in the meet. Cross led the way at 21 minutes, 19.2 seconds, while Leatham finished at 21:19.5.

Freshman Jacob Stone was the third Wildcat across the finish line, finishing seventh overall in his first collegiate race, while Joe Maloney and Tyson Green rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats.

"The lead pack was pretty tight through 5K of the 7K race with our top five in that pack," Weber State men's coach Corbin Talley said. "Our goal was to run together and race controlled over the first 3.5 miles, and then finish strong over the final mile. It went well for the most part, and I was pleased that most of our guys finished with something in the tank.

"Jordan an Dallin ran particularly tough finishing side-by-side as our 1-2 runners. I was alos happy with Colton Rimann's strong finish in our sixth position.

"I thought we had a good week of preparation, and strong efforts on the course this morning. Over the next few weeks, we would like to close the gap between our top runners and our 4-7 guys. I feel like we still have a lot of room for growth and improvement on this team. This was a solid start, but we still have a lot of work to do."

Weber State will be back in action on Sept. 16 at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah.
