Weber State volleyball finished out the opening weekend of Big Sky Volleyball action at Portland State and came up short as they fell in three sets to the Vikings.

"We came out extremely well and competed at a high level for two sets," head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. "Set three we stopped doing what was giving us success and Portland State capitalized on our lack of focus. We will learn and move forward. We still have a lot of Big Sky action ahead of us, and we need to learn that we have control over our emotions and thoughts."

To start the match off, both teams took turns going on 4-0 runs, leap frogging the score until things got all tied up at 11-11. Things remained all tied up until the score was 20-20 and it was a fight to the finish.

The Vikings came up with a 24-22 lead and a big kill by Amanda Varley held off set point and the score was 24-23. Portland State came up with a kill to take the first set 25-23.

Portland State captured the momentum and started the second set off with an 11-5 lead. The Wildcats fought back with a 7-2 run that tied things all up at 14-14 and pushed them to an 18-16 lead. The Vikings answered with a 5-1 run reclaiming the lead at 22-20.

Weber State came up with a big block by Megan Gneiting and Hannah Hill-DeYoung to postpone PSU's second set victory but a Viking kill gave PSU the second set 25-22 win.

The Wildcats couldn't find any footing or any momentum in the third and final set as Portland State took off for a 25-6 third set win and 3-0 overall match win.

Weber State was led by Varley who posted nine kills from 22 attacks with four errors for a .227 percentage. Aubrey Saunders had the match high percentage of .533 with her eight kills from 15 attacks. Ashlyn Power contributed 31 assists the the Wildcats offensive efforts.

Varley also led the defensive efforts with 10 digs on the match. Hill-DeYoung and Gneiting each had three blocks.

The Wildcats finished with 34 kills from 102 attacks with 16 errors for a .102 percentage. WSU also had 37 digs and six team blocks.

WSU is now 2-12 on the season and 0-2 in Big Sky Conference play. The Wildcats return home next weekend to take on Southern Utah and Northern Arizona.
