OGDEN – The Wildcats finally got the lid off the goal.
A brace from junior forward Morgan Quarnberg and a shutout from senior goalkeeper Sydnie Brough lifted the Weber State University women's soccer team to a shutout win over Portland State on Friday night at Wildcat Soccer Field.
"Getting the win tonight was for sure well deserved and worked for," Quarnberg said. "We've been working really hard all season, and we've come together really well, so it's nice to see our hard work pay off and get the win."
The two goals give Quarnberg three for the season and 10 for her career. It's also her second career brace for the Purple and White.
Brough earned her second clean sheet of the year and seventh of her career overall, making four saves against the Vikings.
Both teams fired off four shots in the opening half, and narrowly missed taking the lead at halftime after trading point blank scoring opportunities in the waning minutes.
The Wildcats' offensive, however, took control during the second half and outshot the Vikings 8-3 in the period.
Weber State took the 1-0 lead on a 55th minute penalty kick from Quarnberg after a foul deep in the box. The junior calmly struck the ball in the right side of the goal, and ending a lengthy scoring drought for the Wildcats.
WSU commanded possession after the goal, and finally hit pay dirt again in the 85th minute when junior midfielder Madison Garlock sprung Quarnberg loose with a looping right-to-left cross that landed at her feet as she outraced three Viking defenders before firing a left-to-right shot past Portland State's charging goalkeeper for the 2-0 advantage.
Weber State (1-2-0 Big Sky, 2-9-0 overall) will be back in action on Sunday against Montana (1-1-0 Big Sky, 6-5-1 overall), which fell 1-0 to Idaho State on Friday in Pocatello, Idaho. Kickoff against the Grizzlies is set for 12:30 p.m. at Wildcat Soccer Field.
