OGDEN – Lauren Gibson couldn't have picked a better time for her first career goal for the Wildcats.
The junior midfielder headed the ball into the back of the net late in the first half and the Weber State University women's soccer team drew Montana 1-1 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
Montana (1-1-1 Big Sky, 6-5-2 overall) controlled the opening 30 minutes defensively, forcing the ball into the air and using its height to keep Weber State (1-2-1 Big Sky, 2-9-1 overall) chasing.
The Wildcats finally earned their first shot of the match in the 39th minute, and earned a flurry of chances over the next few minutes, culminating in Gibson's goal.
WSU earned a corner kick in the 41st minute, with junior forward Paige Stevens firing the ball to junior midfielder Madison Garlock, with Garlock pushing the ball across the goal mouth to freshman midfielder Sadie Newsom, and Newsom headed the ball to Gibson, who headed it just inside the near post for the 1-0 lead.
Montana equalized in the second half in the 52nd minute, hitting a crossing angle right-to-left shot from 25 yards out to make it 1-1.
Both the Wildcats and Grizzlies had opportunities to take the lead over the remainder of the match and two overtime periods, but neither side could break through.
Weber State will be back in action on Oct. 8 against in-state rival Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah.
