Wildcat soccer falls in overtime to Thunderbirds

CEDAR CITY, Utah – A prime opportunity ended in heart-breaking frustration for the Wildcats.
Despite holding a 1-0 lead and a man-advantage, the Weber State University women's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to in-state rival Southern Utah on Sunday afternoon at Thunderbird Soccer Field.
Weber State dropped to 1-3-1 in Big Sky play, 2-10-1 overall, with the setback as the league season reached its halfway point. It's the Wildcats' third overtime loss of the season and the eighth one-goal loss.
Junior forward Morgan Quarnberg scored in the 20th minute, converting a crossing left-to-right shot into the back of the net for her third goal in the last two weeks. Quarnberg leads Weber State with four goals this season.
The Wildcats nearly took a 2-0 lead just moments later when junior forward Madison Garlock unspooled a shot from 20 yards out that sailed over the Thunderbirds' goalkeeper, but took a home deflection off the bottom of the rounded crossbar.
With a 1-0 lead in hand at the break, Weber State looked even more in command of the match after Southern Utah received a 50th minute red card, leaving the Thunderbirds with just 10 players for the remainder of the match.
SUU tied the match up in the 74th minute, converting a short-ranged shot on a corner kick to tie things up at 1-1.
In the overtime, the Thunderbirds converted the match winner after a free kick near midfield ended up with the ball in the corner for a cross that Mackenzie Lawrence converted in the 98th minute.
Weber State will start the second half of league play on the road when it faces Northern Arizona on Friday night in Flagstaff, Arizona. Kickoff between the Wildcats and Lumberjacks is set for 8 p.m. MT.
