SAN DIEGO - Weber State fell 83-66 at San Diego in the season opener for the 2018-19 season Tuesday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Wildcats had a halftime lead but couldn't't stop the Toreros in the second half as San Diego scored 58 points and shot 65 percent from the field in the second period.

The Wildcats got off to a good start and led by as many as 11 points midway through the first half. Weber State held a 32-25 lead at halftime but the Toreros started the second half on a 13-5 run to take the lead for the first time at 38-37.

The Wildcats trailed by three points with 14:02 to play but an 18-6 San Diego run over the next six minutes extended the Torero lead to 15 points. USD's largest lead was 18 points.

San Diego shot 33 percent from the field in the first half and shot 65 percent in the second half, including 7 of 10 from 3-point range. The Wildcats finished the game shooting 46 percent from the field  but was just 6 of 21 from 3-point land. USD outrebounded Weber State 42-31 and the Wildcats had 15 turnovers.

Junior Cody John led the Wildcats with 22 points, just two points off his career-high. It was John's first action in two seasons after he missed all of last year with a back injury. John was 9 of 15 from the field and knocked down two 3-pointers.

Freshman Israel Barnes started his first career game and finished with 12 points. Seniors Brekkott Chapman had nine points and Zach Braxton added eight.

"We played great in the first half but we just got tired in the second half and didn't have the same juice and energy," said Weber State head coach Randy Rahe. "San Diego is a very good basketball team but I saw some really good things from our team, we just need some experience and game time. It's going to take a while for us but I'm excited about what this team can become."

Weber State played without junior guard Jerrick Harding who missed the game with a sprained ankle.

The Wildcats return to the Dee Events Center for the home opener Friday night as they host Bethesda. Tipoff will be just after 7 p.m., following the Weber State women's team season opener against LaVerne at 5 p.m.
