Weber State defeats Southern Utah 65-50 on Kids Day

OGDEN – In front of over 3,000 screaming fans for the annual field trip day, Weber State women's basketball defeated Southern Utah 65-50 Thursday afternoon.
"We put more pressure defensively today to get more opportunities on offense," head coach Bethann Ord said. "That's how we were able to put up offensively. We focused on attacking the defense which translated to the offensive success."
After five minutes of play in the first quarter the two teams were tied 5-5. WSU then went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-5 lead. The Wildcats held on and finished the first quarter with a 18-13 lead over Southern Utah.
WSU kept the lead the entire second quarter and led by as much as 10 points. Southern Utah hung in their and went on a 5-2 run at the end of the second and Weber State had a narrow 30-27 lead at half time.
The first three minutes of the second half were fruitless for both teams as neither made a single field goal. The drought was broken by Kailie Quinn who sunk a jumper. WSU went on to outscore SUU 13-6 to finish out the third quarter for a 43-34 score.
In the midst of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run giving Weber State a 20 point lead. Weber State finished the game with a final score of 65-50.
The Wildcats were led by Emily Drake and Larryn Brooks who each dropped 14 points. Quinn also put up double figures with 12 on the night and freshman Shianne Johnson added an even 10 for WSU.
Jocelyn Adams dominated the boards for Weber State as she pulled down 14. Adams also had a great defensive game with four blocks and three steals.
WSU finished the game shooting 36 percent from the field, 37 percent from the three and 91 percent from the free throw line. Weber State had 11 assists, 36 rebounds, eight steals and 14 turnovers.
Southern Utah shot 35 percent from the field, 30 percent from the free throw line, and 62 percent from the free throw line. The Thunderbirds had three assists, five steals, 39 rebounds and 21 turnovers.
The Wildcats capitalized by scoring 25 points of SUU's 21 turnovers.
WSU is now 15-5 overall on the season and 7-2 in Big Sky Conference play. The Wildcats take on Northern Arizona, Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dee Events Center before hitting the road to Northern Colorado Feb. 8 and North Dakota Feb. 10.
