Weber State drops two in Mary Nutter Classic

Weber State softball dropped a pair of games Sunday in the Mary Nutter Classic. WSU first fell to Arkansas 5-2 and later to University of Alabama Birmingham 5-3.
Against Arkansas, the Razorbacks got an early jump on the Wildcats with one run in the first inning and three in the second inning for a 4-0 lead going into the third.
The third inning remained scoreless for both teams but WSU retaliated in the top of the fourth with two runs. Ashlyn Visser and Chloe Camarero both got singles that put them on base and a single from McKinley Brinkerhoff advanced the runners to scoring position.
Sydney White singled down the left field line to drive Visser and Camarero home. The Wildcats only trailed by two going into the final innings of the game.
In the bottom of five the Razorbacks were able to knock another run giving them a 5-2 lead over Weber State. The rest of the game remained scoreless for both teams and WSU fell to Arkansas 5-2.
Against UAB, Weber State played solid defense for the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Courtney Pestka started things off with a double to left center. White laid down a sac bunt to advanced the runner. Takesha Saltern walked and WSU had runners on the corners.
Saltern took off for second and UAB's catcher had a miss throw that allowed Pestka to cross the plate. With a runner on first, Ali Belloc stepped up and homered over the left center fence. WSU ended the inning with three runs off three hits and had a three run advantage over the Blazers going into the top of six.
UAB put up three runs in the top six to tie the game up and then in the top of seven the Blazers had two more cross the plate. WSU couldn't retaliate in the bottom of the seventh and WSU fell 5-3 to UAB.
Weber State now drops to 3-6 overall on the season and has one more game at the Mary Nutter Classic to take on Stanford Monday, Feb. 19 at noon.
