Weber State softball made a clean sweep of the day taking down University of Hawaii twice. In the first game of the double header WSU defeated UH 11-2, followed by a 4-1 victory in the second game.
"We played very solid today," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "We made some great adjustments and had a lot of fun today. We played with a lot of energy and effort. It's only day one so we need to stay humble and hungry for the rest of the tournament."
In the first game against Hawaii, the first two innings went scoreless for both teams. In the top of the third, WSU kicked it into gear.
Sydney White started things off with a single up the middle. Takesha Saltern followed in suit with a single up the left side. Two runners on and the next two batters got out. Two down, Rae Gall up to bat and singles to left center, scoring White and advancing Saltern.
Molly Horne was next up and she singled to right  allowing Saltern and Gall to score. WSU had three runs, four hits and left one on base in the top of three.
WSU held Hawaii in the bottom of three and was back on the offensive. In the top of four, Juliana Tricarico stepped into pinch hit with runners on second and third. Tricarico flied out to center but was able to knock in one run. McKinley Brinkerhoff then doubled to right field scoring two more runs for WSU.
Heading into the final innings of play, WSU had a 6-0 lead. In the top of six, Saltern and Landi Hawker both got on base and Gall stepped up and jacked one over the left center fence. WSU had a 9-0 lead.
Horne fed off the momentum and hit a double to left center. With a runner on second Ashlyn Visser hit another home run for the Wildcats giving WSU an 11-0 lead heading into the bottom of six. This was Visser's third homerun on the season.
UH was able to get two across in the bottom of six but it wasn't enough and Weber State claimed the game due to the run rule after six complete innings of play.
Freshman Kate Donaldson pitched for Weber State picking up her second collegiate win and finished the game with a 2.30 ERA.
In the second game, Weber State waited until the third inning to score. Saltern led off that inning with a single to the pitcher. She then stole second base putting the Wildcats in scoring position.
Hawker was then able to get on base that drove Saltern home. Gall knocked in Hawker with an RBI that gave WSU the 2-0 lead.
Scoring action didn't resume until the top of the sixth when Hawaii was able to drive one across the plate.
Horne started things off in the bottom of six with a single to shortstop. Visser came up with a double to right center that gave WSU its third run of the game. Tricarico came into pinch hit again and was able to come through with a single that put Visser across the plate for a 4-1 score.
The Wildcats pulled together three up three down on defense in the top of the seventh inning and just like that Weber State made the clean sweep of the double header against Hawaii.
Weber State is now 5-7 overall on the season and will go back to battle against Hawaii tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
