OGDEN - Weber State football held its first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday at Stewart Stadium.
"There were a lot of things I liked early in the scrimmage but we have a long way to go still," said WSU head coach Jay Hill. "The defense started a little slow but I thought they finished well and made some big plays. On offense we need to sustain our drives. We need the backups to really take some steps forward." Â
Both sides of the ball stood out during the scrimmage. On offense, Jake Constantine took the snaps with the first team offense and threw for 72 yards. Kaden Jenks and Braden Miles also took reps at quarterback.Â
David Ames had two receptions for 42 yards and the Wildcats had nine different receivers catch passes. WSU combined to rush for over 160 yards between eight different running backs. Red shirt freshman Cam Smith and sophomore Cameron Hansen had the bulk of the carries. Smith had two rushing touchdowns during red zone situations. Â
On defense, several players made big plays. Jonah Williams had an early interception and returned it 49-yards for a touchdown. McKade Mitton and Kawika Tupuola each had sacks and Keilan Benjamin recovered a fumble. WSU also had several tackles for loss.Â
Trey Tuttle also connected on a 30-yard field goal.Â
The Wildcats are ranked eighth in the nation in the FCS STATS preseason poll. WSU kickoffs the 2018 season on Thursday, Aug. 30, against the University of Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The home opener is Saturday, Sept. 15 against South Dakota.Â
Season tickets for Wildcat football are on sale now.Â
