OGDEN - Weber State softball head coach Mary Kay Amicone is pleased to announce Kevin Jensen and Kirtlyn Bohling as new assistant coaches for the Wildcats.
"I'm very happy to welcome two new coaches to our staff who are outstanding people and terrific coaches," Amicone said.
"Kevin Jensen has a wealth of coaching experience that he will be able to share with our program and players," Amicone said. "Kevin has been preparing for this opportunity for awhile, and I'm very happy to welcome him to our Wildcat program. He brings various knowledge with experience in both baseball and softball. We are fortunate and excited to have him on board guiding our pitching staff."
Jensen is coming to Weber State with more than 30 years of coaching experience and spent the last three seasons at Brigham Young University. Â While at BYU he helped lead the Cougars to three straight West Coast Conference championships and NCAA Regional appearances.
Prior to BYU, Jensen spent several years as a coach of several high school baseball and softball programs throughout the state of Utah. In 2006-07, as the head coach, Jensen led the Layton High Lancers to their first undefeated softball season in school history.
Jensen coached the Utah Firebirds club team to the 18 and Under ASA National Softball Championships in Kentucky. He's also taught private softball and baseball lessons for all ages for the last 14 years.
Jensen played baseball and football at Weber State. Â He later played at the University of Utah and Southern Utah before he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1976, where he then played several years in the Reds' minor league system.
"I am extremely happy to be at Weber State University," Jensen said. "I have very strong ties to the university through education and through family members who attended and have been employed by this wonderful institution. Mary Kay is an exceptional coach and has genuine care for her athletes in all aspects of life."
Kevin is married to Suzi and they have three children, Bo, Colton and Jasey.
The other addition to the Wildcat coaching staff is former Wildcat, Kirtlyn Bohling.
"Kirtlyn Bohling is no stranger to Wildcat softball," Amicone said. "Kirty is a proven winner and brings tremendous experience to our pitching staff. She will work along side of Kevin Jensen with our pitchers, after a stellar career in the circle for us.
Bohling will be starting her career in coaching this year with the Wildcats. She pitched for the Wildcats for the last four years where she earned All-Big Sky First Team honors as a pitcher three years in a row with a second team honor her freshman year.
She made 145 appearances in her career. She started in 90 games and pitched 610 innings. She recorded 435 career strikeouts, has a 63-40 career record, an ERA of 2.82. Bohling has broken the Weber State career records for most wins, saves, appearances, games started, innings pitched and strikeouts. She also achieved many accolades in her career at Weber State.
Bohling was named the Female Athlete of the Year her senior season and was Weber State's Big Sky Scholar Athlete of the Year. She also earned All-Big Sky Academic Honors in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
"I'm so excited to be on staff and continue to add to the culture coach Amicone has cultivated here at Weber State," Bohling said. "I can't wait to give back to the program and people that gave me so much. It's gonna be a good year, and of course it's always great great great to be a Wildcat."
