Wildcats fall 3-4 to Akron

OGDEN - The Weber State University's women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Akron in a nail-biting match on Thursday afternoon. The 'Cats clinched the doubles point to open play and won two out of the six singles matches. The match team win came down to a battle in the No. 3 spot.
"This was a great close match and unfortunately it just slipped away from us at the end," head coach Mark Roberts said. "Hats off to Akron who fought hard and found a way to win. I am very proud of the ladies effort today and it was so exciting to have the match come down to the last court."
Weber State started the day by capturing the doubles advantage point. Freshman duo Cali Fuller and Megan Lombardi dominated No.3 doubles by not losing a single game with a 6-0 win over Luisa Echeverry and Carla Flores. Caitlin Herb and Yuuna Ukita defeated Akron's Rita Pedroso and Miruna Vasilescu 6-3 at No.1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles spot was up 4-3 before the match went unfinished.Â
In singles play, Lombardi continued to shine at the No.6 singles as she defeated Flores, 6-4, 6-3. Lombardi is now 3-0 on the season in singles.
Fuller took the second Wildcat win of the day at No.4 singles as she bested Rita Pedroso, 6-4,6-2.
With the overall team win on the line on the No. 3 court Ukita battled Anna Uljanov in a lengthy match. Ukita took the first set with a after a tiebreaker 7-6. She then dropped the second set, 1-6 to tie the match 1-1. The final match point, the overall team victory, came down to a third set showdown. Ukita jumped out 3-0 in the third set and Uljanov tied it up 3-3. The battled continued but Ukita fell 7-6 in the third and the overall match went to Akron 4-3.Â
Weber State is now 2-2 on the season. They will travel to Dixie State on Feb. 7 before a three game series at the UNLV tournament in Las Vegas on Feb. 8.
