OGDEN, Utah - Weber State University's men's tennis team had dominating performance and handed Gonzaga their first loss of the season. WSU went 2-0 on the weekend.
"I am extremely impressed with how the team performed today," Director of Tennis Brad Frerriera said. "We started off with solid doubles performances. Nick and Cezary played the best doubles I've seen in a long time. We had gutsy performance on the singles side, Cezary came from behind to win, Paul beat a great player and Kris van Wyk had a great performance in the determining match to give us the win."
Weber State started doubles play with two commanding performances from Paul Ohde and Bo-Han Li in the No.2 spot and Nick Werner and Cezary Walkusz played in the No.3 spot. Werner and Walkusz gave WSU the first win of the day, they didn't give a single point to Moreno and Rettke winning 6-0. Ohde and Li proved again to be a strong duo as they defeated Eggerl and Everly with an easy 6-3 win.
In singles play, WSU was met with strong performances from the Zags as four matches went to a third set.
Junaho Ye had a hard fought and close first set against Everly with and battled in the second set but ultimately fell, 5-7, 2-6. Â
Ohde played in the No. 3 spot today and continued his hot steak. After a set back in the first set he came back to have a commanding performance in the second and third sets. He defeated Rettke 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to give WSU it's second match point of the day.
Werner played in the No.5 spot and had a strong opening set against Moreno. Moreno came back to push ahead of Werner's strong performance in the second and third set to take the match, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.
Walkusz's match had shifted the energy for the Wildcats as they were down as a team 3-2 to the Zags. This was a close match up from the beginning to the end. Playing in the No. 5 spot against Perkins, he was down the first set. After the first set he didn't give his opponent a chance to retaliate and he went on to defeat Perkins 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to give the 'Cats a fighting chance for a team victory.
Kris van Wyk was the determining player in this match. Playing in the No.1 spot he had a tough competitor in O'Sullivan. With the second team win in a row on the line he came out from a tiebreaker loss and persisted to narrowly defeat his opponent with, 5-7, 7-5 7-6.
