Wildcat tennis hot streak continues with 5-2 win over Northern Colorado

2/24/2019 4:31:00 PM | Men's Tennis

OGDEN, Utah - Weber State University's men's tennis team had another strong conference performance as they defeated Northern Colorado 5-2 Sunday morning. It was WSU's fourth-straight win and the second-straight Big Sky win as the 'Cats also defeated Eastern Washington on Saturday.

"Northern Colorado is a tough team to beat, they are competitive at every position and never give up," Director of Tennis Brad Frerriera said. "We relied on a never die attitude from Michiel and Bo-Han who played tough at the wire. Good grit from all the guys today."

Nick Werner and Cezary Walkusz got things started with a commanding 6-1 win over Julian Kenzlers and Alex Exsted in the No. 3 doubles spot. On the No.2 court Paul Ohde and Bo-Han Li had a tight match against Adolfo Arroyo and Mikey Kritzinger but momentum shifted late in the game and Arroyo and Kritzinger took the match 4-6.

With a 1-1 tie it came down to a fierce battle from Kris van Wyk and Michiel Van Schoor in the No.1 spot. After an impressive performance from the Bears early in the match, WSU shifted the momentum and came back. With the match and doubles point on the line, Kyle Pease and Tommy Smalley had a gutsy ending performance to take the match and clinch the doubles point, 5-7.

In singles play, WSU made quick work on the No. 1, 4 and 6 courts. After losing in the No.5 spot the match came down to Li  who ended up winning 7-5 in the third set after being down 5-4. Van School finished off the match with a tiebreak marathon on the No. 2 court.

After a lengthy doubles match, van Wyk made quick work against Pease, 6-0, 6-2 to tie the match 1-1.

Ohde played in the No. 4 spot against Exstead and continued his hot streak. He won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to secure the 2-1 lead for Weber State.

Werner secured the third win on the singles side to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. After an easy win in the first set his dominant performance propelled him past Tommy Smalley, 6-1, 6-4.

Li had the first of two determining matches for the Wildcats as they were looking to clinch the team win over the Bears. This was a close match up from the beginning to the end. Playing in the No. 3 spot against Kenzlers, he was down the first set. After the first set he didn't give his opponent a chance to switch momentum and he went on to defeat Perkins 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 to clinch the match and team win.

Van Schoor was in the No. 2 spot against Arroyo and found a tough competitor in Arroyo but went on to win in straight sets. After securing the first set with a score of 6-4, the second set came down to a lengthy tiebreaker that he secured 7-6 to close out the morning match.

Weber State is now 4-7 overall on the season and 2-0 in conference play, and will travel to take on Boise State on Saturday March 2 at 11 a.m.
