Men's Tennis Ends Cold Streak With Dominating 6-1 Win

2/9/2019 5:41:00 PM | Men's Tennis

OGDEN, Utah - Weber State University's men's tennis team snapped their seven game losing streak with a dominating 6-1 win over Colorado Mesa University Friday afternoon.

"Sometimes the first win of the season is the hardest," Director of Tennis Brad Ferriera said. "Hopefully this is the catalyst we need to get going. I'm happy with how the boys played today and are looking forward to our match tomorrow."

The doubles point came down to a determining match on court No. 1 with Kris van Wyk and Nick Werner. This is the first match with van Wyk and Werner as partners and they had a strong performance to defeat CMU's Moises Cure and William Agritelley 6-4.

Paul Ohde and Bo-Han Li in the No.2 spot secured the first win of the day for the 'Cats as they beat Alain De La Bastide and Lucas Martin 6-3. It was the second win for the Ohde and Li duo who will be partners for tomorrow's match as well.

In singles play, WSU dominated by winning five out of the six matches.

Striking first was van Wyk's dominating win over Max Lindqvist 6-1, 6-0. This was his second win of the day. He is currently 2-5 on the season in singles play.

Shortly after the win on the No. 1 court, Werner came out from his match victorious with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 win over Christian Albrechtsen. Werner went 2-0 on the day after winning his doubles match.

In his first year with the Wildcats, Ohde has proved to be a strong fixture of this team as he moved up to play in the No. 2 singles. Today he defeated Cure in a quick 6-2, 6-2 match to secure Weber's first win of the season.

Li won his second match of the day with an easy 6-3, 6-3 win over Martin. He is the winningest Wildcat this season with four singles victories.

The final win of the day came from Cezary Walkudsz in the No. 5 spot. In a tight first set he came out with a 1-0 lead heading into the second set. In the second set he didn't offer his opponent an opportunity to extend the game beyond a second set as he won the match 7-5, 6-3.

Weber State is now 1-7 on the season and will continue their home meet stretch on Feb. 10 to take on Gonzaga on Sunday at 10 a.m.
