Weber State sweeps opening Big Sky double header

The Weber State softball team started Big Sky Conference play by sweeping Northern Colorado in the double header. First WSU came away with a 6-4 win and later a 6-1 victory. Â
GAME ONE
How it Happened: Northern Colorado started the game getting three runs across the plate to take an early lead. Later, in the third inning the Bears were able to get one more run on the board for a 4-0 lead over WSU.
In the top of the fifth inning, WSU sparked some offensive momentum. Takesha Saltern tripled to center field immediately putting the Wildcats in scoring position. Later, Brook Moeai singled to left center for an RBI.
In the top of the sixth inning, Sydney White had a single for an RBI to start things off. Saltern singled to third base to put runners on the corners. Saltern took off for second and White was able to sneak in across the plate and just like that WSU trailed by just one.
Seventh inning, Courtney Pestka had a three run homer over left field to to surpass Northern Colorado with a 6-4 score. WSU's infield pulled out some solid defense in the bottom of the seventh to give WSU the win.
At the Plate: Weber State finished with 14 hits. Takesha Saltern went 3-4 including a triple. Courtney Pestka had a three run homer and went 2-3 from the plate. The Wildcats had just three strikeouts and left eight runners on base. WSU came away with five RBIs.
In the Circle: Tatiana Su'esu'e started in the circle for the Wildcats and pitched three complete innings. Su'esu'e gave up five hits, four runs, and one walk. Addie Jensen came away with the win for WSU as she pitched the final four innings and gave up just two hits and two walks but struck out 6-15 batters she faced.
GAME TWO
How it Happened: Weber State took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, that all started with a single by Ashlyn Visser that scored two runs. Faith Hoe kept things rolling wit a single up the middle that scored Visser. Northern Colorado answered in the bottom of the first with one run from two hits but WSU's defense left two Bears on base.
The next four innings went scoreless for both teams. Â
In the top of the sixth, WSU found themselves with two outs within the first two batters of the inning. Courtney Pestka changed that up and was able to get on base. Lauren Hoe came up next and doubled to left center for an RBI.
Northern Colorado was able to load up the bases but WSU's defense preventing the Bears from scoring any runs. Weber State had a 4-1 lead going into the seventh inning.
WSU put runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh inning. Visser rocked a double for two RBIs before Visser was out at third base. Chloe Camarero came up with two 5-3 putouts and a catch in center field by Landi Hawker in the bottom of the seventh, Weber State held off a Bears come back. The Wildcats came away with the 6-1 victory.
At the Plate: The 'Cats finished with 11 hits scoring six runs. Landi Hawker went 3-4 Â and Lauren Hoe went 2-3 with a double and one RBI. Ashlyn Visser also had a good day at the plate going 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Weber State had only one strikeouts, left five runners on base throughout the game and drew one walk. Weber State ended the day with two doubles. Â
In the Circle: Kate Donaldson (3-5) started the game in the circle for WSU and pitched all seven innings. Gave up one run and three walks but also came away with four strikeouts in the 29 batters she faced.
z Weber State will take on Northern Colorado for the last game of the series before returning home to take on the University of Utah on March 27 and then Sacramento State March 29-30.
