WSU narrowly edged out by Idaho 4-3

3/30/2019 9:13:00 PM | Men's Tennis

Weber State University's men's tennis hosted the Idaho Vandals and were narrowly edged out 4-3. WSU is entering the tail end of their season with only three matches remaining.

The Vandals picked up the doubles point with a clean sweep. Idaho started off with a quick 6-2 win on the No.2 court over Wildcat duo Kris van Wyk and Cezary Walkusz. With a 6-4 win over Bo-Han Li and Junhao Ye clinched the doubles point for Idaho.

In singles action, the Vandals took a 2-0 lead after claiming a victory on the No.1 court.

van Wyk's win over Popescu gave WSU the first match point of the afternoon. He made quick work in the No.2 spot with a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Freshman Paul Ohde added to Weber's momentum as he dominated his opponent on the No.4 court. Playing against Gui Scarpelli, Ohde didn't drop a set and only gave away four total games to clinch a 6-2, 6-2 win to tie up WSU and Idaho with 2 games apiece.

Idaho captured two victories in the No. 5 and 6 spots to clinch the match.

Li finished out and won the final match in a three-set thriller. After a 4-6 deficit in the first set, he rallied for a 6-4, 6-4 finish to end out the competition.

Weber State is now 4-13 overall on the season and 2-5 in Big Sky conference play. WSU will hit the road to Flagstaff, AZ to take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Saturday, April 6.
