Wildcats fall in five sets to Southern Utah

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball battled in a five set loss to Southern Utah Saturday afternoon.
How it happened: Early in the first set, the Wildcats found themselves trailing 12-8. SUU kept pounding on WSU as they went on an 8-1 run to take a 20-9 lead. The Wildcats made a surge and found some momentum at the end of the first set as they managed to put up seven more points but the Thunderbirds came away with the 25-17 first set win.
Weber State refused to have a slow start in the second set as they jumped out to a 9-4 lead. The Wildcats never gave up the lead in that second set. Late in the set, Weber State went on a 9-1 run to take a 23-13 lead.
To seal the second set win for WSU, Dani Nay pounded down a kill to take it to set point. SUU put off set point by scoring three consecutive points, but Hannah DeYoung came away with a kill up the middle for a 25-17 WSU win.
Weber State came out hot in the third set jumping out to an 11-3 lead. Southern Utah didn't let that stand for long as they went on a 6-0 run to tie the game up at 13-13. The two squads remained within one or two points for the remainder of the set. Neither team able to get any big runs or capture big momentum.
With the score all tied up at 22-22, DeYoung put down a kill and a block, with Megan Gneiting on the assist to take it to set point. Nay came up clutch with a service ace to end the third set in favor of WSU with a 25-22 score.
Weber State had a slow start to the fourth set and ended up falling 25-16.
Southern Utah jumped out ahead 6-1 in the fifth set and Weber State fought to cut the deficit just 10-8 but ultimately they couldn't finish out the fifth set and fell 15-11.
Killin' It: Kennedy Williams led the Wildcats with 13 kills on the afternoon. Nay was not far behind with 12 and DeYoung added 11. DeYoung led Weber State in hitting percentage with an impressive .476.
The Wildcats ended the match with 55 kills from 162 attacks with 26 errors for a .179 percentage.
Ashlyn Power had 45 assists on the match. Weber State had four service aces, with two of them coming from Gneiting.
Diggin' it: Weber State had four Wildcats record double digit digs. Helena Khouriled the way with 18. Rylin Roberts and Power each had 14 and Gneiting rounded things off with 10. Weber State ended with 71 total digs.
Blockin' it: Sam Schiess led WSU on the blocks with seven total. DeYoung and Geniting were also forces to be reckoned with as DeYoung had four and Gneiting had five.
Double up: Power was the lone Wildcat to record a double-double on the night with her 45 assists and 14 digs.
Notes to know: Weber State is now 9-4 overall on the season and 0-2 in Big Sky Conference play. WSU is now on a two match losing streak. The last time WSU and SUU went into five sets was in 2016 where WSU came out victorious. The last time Weber State lost to Southern Utah in five sets was in 2014.
Next Up: WSU will return home on Oct. 5 to take on Northern Colorado.
