Weber State men's tennis started the 2020 season on Sunday morning with a 5-2 win over Grand Canyon.Â
"It was a great effort today," said Director of Tennis Brad Ferriera. "I was very impressed with the freshman, they had a strong match in doubles that ended up giving us the doubles point. Sebastian Buxman kept it going with a solid win in the No. 5 spt. Killian Sinclair took his time but pulled out a very good tiebreaker to win. Arthur Serafim dropped the first but came back very strong to secure the winning point. Kris van Wyk played a very good player in the No. 1 spot who has solid wins over ranked players and he barely came up short."
In doubles action, Grand Canyon grabbed a win in the No. 1 spot but Sebastian Buxman and Kilian Sinclair defeated Weber and Magne 6-4 in the No. 3 spot. With the doubles point on the line Kris van Wyk and Bo-Han Li battled into extra games but came away with a 7-5 win over Mueller and Kirsch. WSU came away with the doubles point advantage.Â
In singles play, Buxman started things off on a positive note for the Wildcats by defeating Kirsch 6-0, 7-5.Â
Li was the next Wildcat to come away with a victory as he defeated Mueller 6-2, 6-4. At this point the overall match score was 3-1.
Arthur Serafim battled and took his match into three full sets but came away with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win over Franke in the No.2 spot. With Searfim's win, WSU clinched the overall match victory.Â
The rest of the matches played out and one more Wildcats picked up a win. Sinclair defeated Magne in the No. 6 spot in three sets with scores of 5-7, 6-4, 7-6.Â
Weber State is now 1-0 overall on the season. WSU will hit the road to take on in-state rival the University of Utah on Thursday, Jan. 16.Â
