Weber State men's tennis took on in-state rival Utah today and fell 5-2.Â
"This was a very good match for us," said Director of Tennis Brad Ferriera. "The most impressive win was by Arthur Serafim who beat a player that was ranked #15 in the world in juniors and 750 ATP. Kris van Wyk had a very dominant match at the No. 1 spot. We came up short on the other matches, although, we took them to three sets in the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots. We scared them a bit. These guys did this on their own and it was a great effort."
The University of Utah came away with the doubles point after picking up wins in the No. 3 and No.1 spot. The No. 1 spot was a narrow match as WSU duo Arthur Serafim and Brendan Barr fell just 6-5 to Utah's Randy Cory and Russell Benkaim. The No. 2 spot went unfinished.Â
In singles play, the Utes picked up the first point in the No. 6 spot. Kris van Wyk came up with a great win in the No. 1 spot by defeating Benkaim with 6-2, 6-3.Â
Utah came away with wins in the No. 4 and No. 3 spots to claim the overall match victory. Singles action wasn't over yet.Â
Serafim had a big win in the No. 2 spot. Serafim took down Franco Capalbo with a 6-7, 6-2 (10-7) victory to give WSU its second point of the match.Â
Sebastian Buxman, Bo-Han Li and Brendan Barr each took their matches into a full three sets but fell just short.Â
Weber State is now 1-1 overall on the season and will hit the road to take on Denver Jan. 24 and Bryant Jan. 25.Â
