Wildcats fall in season opener at GCU

Weber State had four players in double figures but a slow start cost the Wildcats in the season opener. WSU fell 92-73 at Grand Canyon University Friday afternoon at GCU Arena in Phoenix in the season opener for both teams.
GCU jumped out to a 29-10 lead after the first quarter and the Wildcats couldn't recover. WSU outscored the Lopes by seven in the second quarter to trail by 12 at halftime, but the 'Cats never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
The Lopes shot 50 percent from the field, compared to 40 percent shooting for the Wildcats. WSU outrebounded Grand Canyon 40-31 but the Wildcats committed 27 turnovers.
Junior Daryn Hickok led four Wildcats in double figure scoring, as she finished with 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting, and added three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Junior Kori Pentzer added 12 points, while Jaydn Matthews had 11 points and Ula Chamberlin added 10. Dominique Williams had a game-high 12 rebounds.
Weber State returns home for the home opener Sunday at 12 p.m. against Texas A&M International. Currently no spectators are allowed at the Dee Events Center. The game will be streamed online for free on Pluto TV 1054 and on WatchBigSky.com.
