Wildcats Bounce Back By Winning In Cedar City

10/10/2021 3:10:00 PM | Women's Soccer

After a rough, 4-1 loss to Northern Arizona that caught many around the conference by surprise, the Weber State Wildcats showed their toughness by bouncing back and beating Southern Utah on the road 1-0.

Sunday's match against SUU was high stakes because the 'Cats needed a win in order to maintain control of their own destiny. While their loss to NAU stung, in the end it was only their first loss in conference play which bumped the Wildcats down to second place in the standings but only behind Montana and Northern Colorado who both sit in first place and haven't suffered a blemish on their record. What this means is that WSU can still win the Big Sky regular season crown if they win their remaining games.

Despite the pressure that can come with must-win games, Weber State went out on Sunday afternoon and left their arch-rivals field without allowing a goal. Kaytlin Bradley got the start at goal keeper and along with the shutout, had seven saves and the victory.

In total, SUU had 18 shots which typically would paint a picture of dominance when you notice that the 'Cats only had 6 but throughout the match it never felt as if WSU was on the verge of falling flat on their face. Instead, it felt like it was only a matter of time until WSU put points on the board and while they were only able to get the one score in the 57th minute off a Yira Yoggerst corner kick that pin-balled between players before Taylor Slack knocked it in, it was enough to win the game.

Along with winning a pivotal game and seeing Slack score her 4th goal of the year, this afternoon also marked the first time since 2016 that the Wildcats have won in Cedar City.

With the victory, the Wildcats now sit at 7-6 on the year but more importantly, they hold that 4-1 record now in conference play. With this weekend road trip now in the past, Weber State is set to head into the most important portion of the season. They'll kick it off on Friday at 3 P.M. against Sacramento State before Senior Day on Sunday at 1 P.M. against Portland State. Then, WSU will hit the road for their final two regular season games against the Montana Grizzlies and Northern Colorado Bears.

The race to the Big Sky crown kicks off with that Friday matchup against the Sac State Hornet, which of course, will be featured on ESPN+.
