Wildcats Look To Stay In The Hunt Against Hornets And Vikings

10/14/2021 4:34:00 PM | Women's Soccer

After slipping up against Northern Arizona and then beating arch-rival Southern Utah, the (7-6, 4-1) Weber State Wildcats are back in Ogden to wrap up their home slate and attempt to continue their climb towards a Big Sky regular season crown.

Before the loss to NAU, the Wildcats were riding a three game winning streak and had sprinted out to 3-0 in conference play and despite the loss, they remain in the drivers seat when it comes to controlling their own championship-sized destiny.

On Friday, Sacramento State will come into town looking to turn their season around, they've had their share of struggles as they sit 3-8-2 on the year while being 2-3 against Big Sky foes.

Then on Sunday, Portland State will be WSU's Senior Day guests as the wildcats honor Kaytlin Bradley, Aubrey Hadley, Taylor Slack, Sadie Newsom, Nixie Hernandez, Trinity Kerr, Kinsley Napoli, Harlee Turnbow and Amy Kenney who will all be playing in their final game at the Wildcat Soccer Field.

WSU's recent run of success began after returning home from Stillwater, OK where they had battled Oklahoma State tough but fell 1-0 in a match that could've gone either way. Then they beat both Idaho and Eastern Washington in stunning fashion by mounting comebacks from down 1-0 and winning 2-1 in back-to-back games.

Against Idaho, WSU saw goals from both Yira Yoggerst who was assisted by Morgan Furmaniak, and Taylor Slack who's assist came from Lauren McConnell. The goals against EWU came from Furmaniak who Yoggerst assisted and then an own goal after Harlee Turnbow fired a shot that hit the crossbar the went off the goalies back and in. Bradley was in the box against Idaho while Mekell Moss was the keeper against EWU and they were each was key to victory as neither of them allowed a second-half goal which allowed the 'Cats to tie the game but also eventually take the lead.

Following the two comebacks, WSU thumped Idaho State 3-0 and only allowed ISU to get 2 shots off. The three scores came from Slack who opened then closed the scoring and Newsom who was assisted by Shea Christiansen.

In their most recent outings, the Wildcats had that rough 4-1 loss to NAU where Furmaniak scored a goal and then their victory over SUU where Slack scored the lone point.

This year's goal scorers have been Furmaniak (5), Slack (4), Yoggerst (1), Lily Webster (1), Newsom (1), McConnell (1), and Amy Kenney (1).

The first of the Wildcats final home outings will kickoff at  3 P.M. on Friday, Oct. 15 against Sac State and then Sunday's match will start at 1 P.M.
