In front of over 700 fans on a Saturday afternoon in which Weber State Volleyball celebrated all players who have come through the program, the Wildcats did their alumni proud and swept Eastern Washington out of Swenson Gym by a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-9) final score.
With tailgating in the Swenson Gym parking lot prior to the game and the celebration of Wildcat Volleyball alumni, the atmosphere in Swenson Gym on Saturday was rocking and the Wildcats continued their historic run of dominance.
Statistically the first set was a little funky. The Wildcats and Eagles had an almost identical amount of kills through the set, but the swing attempts are what separated the two teams. Weber State hit .387 compared to EWU's .125, and the Wildcats tacked on a couple of trademark service aces to control the first set and win it 25-16.
The second set was the closest of the day. With two ties and a lead change, the Eagles did their best to keep up with the red-hot Wildcats on their incredible stretch of play, but Weber State proved to be too much. Through two sets, the Wildcat All-Americans, Rylin Adams and Dani Nay, combined for 19 kills and Emma Mangum chipped in another five, giving the Wildcats more than enough firepower to stave off the much-improved Eagle squad. WSU ended the set with a 25-21 win.
After 20 matches this season, WSU fans have become accustomed to matches only lasting three sets and that's what Wildcat Nation saw again on Saturday. The third set was some of the most impressive and fluid volleyball that these Wildcats have played in Swenson Gym. The Wildcat attack and block kept Eastern Washington from even reaching 10 points in the set, as WSU won it 25-9, and extended its consecutive set win streak to 22.
It's safe to say that the Wildcats are indeed feeling 22 today. 22 consecutive set victories to go along with a school record of 22 straight wins at Swenson Gym. In addition to those historic numbers, WSU has won 18 Big Sky Conference matches in a row dating back to last season. As for this season, the Wildcats upped their record to 15-5 (10-0) and as of this writing have a two-match lead in the Big Sky standings over Portland State and Northern Colorado.
Adams returned to the form that won her the Big Sky MVP in the 2020-21 season, and had 14 kills on a .333 hitting percentage, and one service ace. Nay's powerful swing added another 12 kills to her season total as she nears the 1,000 kill mark for her career. Ashlyn Power had 29 assists on the day and continues to inch closer to the Big Sky career assist record in the rally-scoring era.Baylee Bodily led #AceState in serving with three service aces and was impressive in the Wildcat block with two block assists.
The Wildcats will hit the road over the next two weeks and face what might be their toughest road trip of the season this upcoming Thursday and Saturday. The 'Cats head to "The Nest" in Sacramento to take on the resurgent Sacramento State Hornets on Thursday, then to Portland State to play a strong Vikings squad that Saturday.
The Wildcats will return home to close out the regular season on November 11th and 13th against NAU and SUU respectively. Following those matches, Swenson Gym will play host to the Big Sky tournament as Weber State will look to defend their Big Sky Conference tournament trophy and return to the NCAA tournament. Tickets to those matches can be purchased online or by calling Weber State's ticket office at 801-626-8500.
