On Sunday afternoon, the Weber State Wildcats fought but fell to the Montana Grizzlies 1-0 in the championship round of the Big Sky tournament.
The 'Cats were coming off a 3-2 victory over the top-seeded Northern Colorado Bears on Friday and before that, they had drilled the Idaho Vandals 3-0, which set them up with a date against the Grizzlies who had got the best of them during the final weekend of the regular season where UM won 2-1.
Sunday's match was the war that was promised as the physicality and competitiveness equaled what is expected whenever these two rivals meet. In the opening minutes of the game, the Wildcats dominated the ball and were forcing Montana to scramble before the Grizzlies were able to flip the script, taking control of the game and eventually tacking on the lone score in the 36th minute.
When the teams came out of the locker room, the clash between the 'Cats and Griz' raged on throughout the remainder of the match but WSU was unable to find an equalizer. Montana's 1-0 lead at the half was enough to give them the victory over the Wildcats and claim the conference championship.
After the game, Sadie Newsom, Morgan Furmaniak, Taylor Slack, and Yira Yoggerst were each named to the Big Sky's all-tournament team as each of them scored a goal throughout the tournament while Yoggerst also collected an assist.
The Wildcats 2021 campaign has come to an end, as they went from being picked to finish sixth in the conference to just one win from becoming conference champions.
