Weber State picks up 85-75 road win at Montana State

Koby McEwen had a WSU career-high 31 points in the win.

BOZEMAN, Mont. - As Weber State returned to Big Sky play, senior Koby McEwen had a career-high 31 points to help the Wildcats get back on the winning track with an 85-75 win at Montana State Thursday night. 

The Wildcats knocked down 12 3-pointers in the win to move to 3-0 in conference play and closed out 2021 with a key road win. 

How it happened 
The game saw 11 ties and 12 lead changes. 

Montana State jumped out to a 7-2 lead but the Wildcats rallied back to tie it 9-9. Weber State had its biggest lead of nine points at 28-19 with 9:32 to play in the first half. 

WSU started 7 of 9 from 3-point range and started the game 9 of 9 from the free throw line. The 'Cats had a 43-40 lead at halftime after knocking down eight 3-pointers. 

The Wildcats led by five points five minutes into the half when Montana State went on a 6-0 run to take the first lead of the second half. 

It was a back-and-forth game much of the rest of the second half until Dyson Koehler knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Wildcats a five point lead with 6:07 to play. WSU never trailed the rest of the way. 

JJ Overton hit a 3-pointer with 2:50 to play that extended the lead to five points and Dillon Jones had a spinning layup with 54 seconds left that put the 'Cats up 79-74. 

Weber State closed the game with six free throws in the final 31 seconds. 

Numbers to know
The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field, including 60 percent from 3-point range as they finished 12 of 20 from beyond the arc. Weber State also shot 76 percent from the free throw line. 

McEwen finished with a career-high 31 points on 9 of 15 shooting, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range. He was also 8 of 10 from the free throw line and had four rebounds, three steals and two assists in 38 minutes of action.  

Dillon Jones 19 points, six rebounds and two assists and was 9 of 10 from the free throw line. JJ Overton added 16 points and Dyson Koehler had 11 points with three 3-pointers.

"I was really proud of our team after the last few games. They came together and had an edge to them and found a way to get a good road win. Koby was outstanding tonight and carried us in a lot of ways. 

Up next
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Wildcats and improved WSU to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in Big Sky play. 

Weber State will kickoff 2022 on the road at Montana on Saturday night at 7 p.m. WSU then plays at Idaho State next Saturday, Jan. 8.
