Wildcats defeat Hornets 3-1, improve to 10-0

2/27/2021 7:33:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

OGDEN, UT - The Wildcats played an extremely tough match against the Sacramento State Hornets on Saturday, February 27th in the Swenson Gym. Weber State came away with the 3-1 victory, and improved their record to 10-0.

The Hornets went up early in the first set against the Wildcats, but Weber State clawed its way back into the lead mid-set with a long volley. The Wildcats did well defending Sac State's offense and kept the energy high. Once Weber State took the lead 15-14, the 'Cats went on a seven-point scoring streak. Sam Schiess led Weber State in kills in the first set, earning six to help the Wildcats take the first set 25-18.

Weber State and Sac State both came out hard in the second set. There were many instances where a volley would go back and forth between the teams a few times before a point was scored, and the score stayed close until halfway through the set. Weber State pulled away until the end of the set, but Sac State crawled their way back. The set was tied at 23-23, but the Hornets were able to find two points to beat the 'Cats 23-25.

The third set continued the difficult battle between the Wildcats and Hornets. Though Weber State found many aces throughout the set, Sac State stayed strong and didn't let the Wildcats have any breaks. It was a battle right to the end of the third set, but Weber State edged out Sac State with a kill from Sam Schiess to take the set point 25-23.

Weber State and Sac State's close battle continued in set four, with neither team pulling away from the other by more than five points. Halfway through the set, the Wildcats went on a five-point scoring streak to tie the score up 15-15. The score went back and forth for the rest of the set, until the Wildcats made a final push to win the set 25-21.

This is the first time since 1988 that the Wildcats have gone on a 10-game winning streak, and this win ties the best streak in WSU history. This is also the best start for the season that the Wildcats have ever had.

Weber State match leaders include: Rylin Adams with 20 kills, Dani Nay with two aces and 23 digs, Sam Schiess with 5 blocks, and Ashyln Power with 50 assists.

The Wildcat volleyball team heads to Northern Arizona on March 7th and 8th to take on the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff, Arizona.
