Summer Allen finishes 7th, crushes Wildcat NCAA Cross Country Championship record

STILLWATER, OK - Summer Allen ran a record-breaking race at the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma on March 15th. The race was held at the Oklahoma State University cross country course, and hosted by OSU.

Summer Allen ran extremely well on the 6K course, and competed against the best cross country athletes in the country, including individuals from Alabama, Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, Florida State, Northern Arizona, Oklahoma State, Portland, Stanford, and more. Allen finished in seventh place, crossing the finish line at 20:23.3, just .3 behind Northern Arizona's Taryn O'Neill who earned first place at the Big Sky Championships on February 27th.

"Summer ran a fantastic race," said women's cross country head coach, Paul Pilkington. "She executed just like we planned...she went to work on the top of the hills and just really flew down them. She just kept moving, and passed up five girls in the last 500 meters of the race. This is our highest finish ever in the NCAA Championships."

Allen's finish marks the best cross country finish at the NCAA Championships in Weber State University history. Allen crushed the previous record of 24th, set in 1997 by Sharlynn Maughan. Summer Allen earns All-American honors with her seventh place finish, and joins the ranks among Weber State's bests including Sharlynn Maughan (1997), Rebecca Bennion (2000), and Amber Henry (2012).

This is the second time Allen has competed at the NCAA Championships. She qualified as a freshman in 2013 and earned 156th with a time of 21:41.1, moving up 11 places from her start. Allen has since served an LDS mission, married fellow cross country athlete Christian Allen, and had a child.
