OGDEN, UT - The Weber State women's volleyball team made history on March 20th with a win that earned them the Big Sky Conference regular season title against Montana State. The Wildcats took the Bobcats down 3-1.
As anticipated, the Wildcats and Bobcats (no. 1 and no. 2 in the Big Sky) gave each other a hard time throughout the first set. Right from the beginning, both teams came out hard and the score reflected that. The score crept up point-by-point on either side, and both teams had good moments out on the court. Weber State had some good performances in the first set from Sam Schiess and Dani Nay. Schiess had five kills in the first set, and a .500 hitting percentage. Nay had three kills with a .500 hitting percentage. The Wildcats edged out the Bobcats towards the end of the set, and took the first point 25-21.
Weber State went on a six point scoring streak early in the second set, with Dani Nay serving. Following the streak, the Bobcats were able to finally get more points on the board, and caught back up with the Wildcats. Weber State was firing on all cylinders in set two, and gave themselves a wide gap in the score halfway through the set. By the time the score made it to 25, however, both teams were fighting as hard as they could. The lead went back and forth between Weber State and Montana State until the Wildcats were finally able to finish the set off at 29-27.
The Bobcats came out with high intensity in the third set, after losing a close battle in the second. Though Weber State earned the first point in the set, Montana State earned service possession and caught back up to the Wildcats. The set proved to once again be a close battle between the first and second place teams in the Big Sky Conference. The Bobcats began to pull away halfway through the set, and the Wildcats got unlucky on a few blocks. Montana State earned the set point 25-15.
The Wildcats started set four out with two aces from Ashlyn Power. Weber State stepped up the intensity after falling in set three, and began putting points on the board. Halfway through the set, the Wildcats took control of the score, and pulled out the set victory 25-18.
With this win, Weber State earns the Big Sky Conference Regular Season title for the first time in Wildcat history, and the first place spot going into the Big Sky Conference Championships beginning on March 31st.
The Wildcats and Bobcats will play a rematch on Sunday, March 21st at 4:30 pm to finish out the regular season.
