POCATELLO, IDAHO - The Wildcats competed against the Bengals for a total of 110 minutes in Pocatello on Friday, April 2nd. The game ended in a 1-1 draw after double-overtime.
"We played very well tonight," said head coach, Craig Sanders. "We conceded an early goal against the run of play, and our relentless pressure was rewarded with a late equalizer."
Weber State came out hard in the first half of play on the Bengals new turf field. However, unfortunately for the Wildcats the Idaho State Bengals were able to put one in the back of the net in the fourth minute of play. After the goal, the Wildcats stepped up their energy and organization, and the remainder of the 45 minute half was mainly played in the Bengal's defensive half. Weber State took 11 shots to Idaho State's three, and had three corner kick opportunities. The 'Cats had a few chances where the ball was bouncing around in front of the Idaho State goal, but were unable to get a good foot on it to score. The half ended 1-0 for the Bengals.
The Wildcats completely dominated the second half against Idaho State. The majority of possession was held by the 'Cats, and the game was played mostly in Weber State's offensive half. The women took 8 shots and had many good opportunities to score. The Wildcats finally found the back of the net in the 82nd minute when Mylee Broad crossed the ball to Haley Thomas. Thomas trapped the ball and calmly slotted it to the left netting to tie the game up at 1-1. By the end of regulation, the score was still tied at one, and the game was forced to overtime.
The first overtime period was a battle between the Wildcats and Bengals. Weber State took the lone shot in the period, and Idaho State didn't take any. The Wildcats and Bengals finished the first overtime period still tied up 1-1 and the game was forced to a second ten-minute overtime.
The Wildcats also took the only shot in the second overtime period, but were unable to put it away. Weber State and Idaho State both fought until the end of the game, but neither was able to find a goal to finish it out. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
"It was a dominant Weber State performance, just could not convert the possession and shooting advantage into a winning goal. Thrilled with how we played, disappointed that it only earned us a 1-1 tie," said Sanders.
Weber State will head back to Pocatello for a second match against the Idaho State Bengals on Sunday, April 4th, at 1:00 pm.
