OGDEN – The Weber State softball team jumped out of Big Sky play for the weekend, splitting a doubleheader with Colorado State on Saturday at Wildcat Softball Field.
The Wildcats took the opening game 4-1, but the Rams bounced back in a big way, taking a 12-2 decision in game two.
The Rams got on the board first in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead as Corinna Gamboa dropped a perfectly executed squeeze bunt single to score Peyton Allen in the top of the fourth inning.
Weber State came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead as Lauren Hoe and Makayla Donahoo singled home runs.
The Wildcats added another pair of runs in the fifth inning as pitcher Mariah Ramirez gave herself a couple of insurance runs on a double to right field that scored Faith Hoe and Chloe Camarero.
Ramirez turned in a great outing in the circle for the Wildcats, allowing only four hits and the single run over seven innings while walking none and striking out eight. Ramirez improved to 8-4 on the season with the win.
In the second game, Colorado State came out firing on offense from the start, scoring five times in the opening inning. Both teams scored a single run in the third to make the score 6-1, with the Wildcats scoring on a great baserunning effort from Mia Rushton. The freshman advanced to third on a Chloe Camarero groundout, and was extremely aggressive, taking an extra base and scoring on a great slide to avoid the tag on a play at home.
The Rams put the game away with another six runs in the fifth inning. Allen highlighted the six run fifth with a three-run home run to left center.
Weber State scored a final run in the bottom of the fifth as Rushton scored again, this time on an Ashlyn Visser double to right field.
Rushton went 3-for-7 on the day, picking up hits in both games to extend her consecutive games hitting streak to 14 straight. Faith Hoe also added three hits for the Wildcats, going 3-for-5 on the day.
The Wildcats moved to 13-12 overall on the season with the split, while Colorado State moved to 8-10 on the year. WSU will be back in action on Tuesday, April 6 with another non-conference game against Utah Valley at Wildcat Softball Field before heading to Sacramento next weekend for a crucial three-game conference series against Sacramento State.
