Weber State Volleyball closed out its out of conference schedule on Friday afternoon with a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 23-25) loss to the Kansas State Wildcats.
WSU got had a big lead to start the match, but it would be back and forth all the way through. Weber State had a 23-20 lead towards the latter end of things but Kansas State went on a three-point run to tie things up. After Jeremiah Larsen called a timeout, Weber State came out on fire and closed out the first set by notching the last two points, including a super stuff by middle blocker Baylee Bodily and outside hitter Rylin Adams, and taking the first set 25-23.
As the teams progressed through the second set, there was little to separate the two sides as things were all tied up at 18 in the latter parts of the set. The Kansas State offense found its rhythm, however, and KSU scored its final five points all on kills, giving them the 25-23 second set victory.
KSU had a large advantage in the third set after using an efficient offensive attack to create some separation from Weber State, but WSU rallied late. Kansas State had a 24-20 lead and WSU scored three straight points, forcing the match's third deuce set and KSU to call a timeout. Following the time, Kansas State came out and scored the set's final point to get it a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth and final set proved to be a near carbon copy of the third set. KSU had the 24-20 lead, Weber State rattled off three in a row, and Kansas State finished the match out with another 25-23 set victory.
Adams once again led Weber State in kills with 16, while Dani Nay had another double-double with 14 kills, 16 digs, and added three more aces to her season total. Setter Kate Standifird was in the starting seven today and dished out 41 assists in the four-set match.
Regarding the closely contested match, Larsen stated, "I thought we played hard this weekend. We're still having issues maintaining any form of consistency through challenges. However, I feel the Kansas State game was the closest we have been to performing at a consistent level since we played BYU."
Weber State finishes out what was far and away the toughest out of conference schedule in Larsen's tenure with a 5-5 record. "We feel that our non-conference schedule has prepared us for what we are about ready to go into in conference," Larsen said. "We played some very good teams that have challenged us, and we are excited to see how that has prepared us as we enter conference play."
The Wildcats will return to Swenson Gym for the start of conference play on Thursday, September 23rd against Portland State, and on Saturday, September 25th versus Sacramento State. WSU is currently on a school record 19 match home winning streak at Swenson Gym.
